Even though member work is optional at Weavers Way, cooperator labor is deeply important to the Co-op. Working integrates members into the community and function of the Co-op, and develops members' relationships with each other, the staff, and our farmers and vendors. Members who work better understand Weavers Way's challenges and possibilities and can better offer their unique gifts and talents to make it the best it can be.
Six hours per adult per household per year is all it takes to become a working member. Weavers Way has one of the smallest work requirements of any co-op in the country. For this minimal investment in time, working members also get 5% off of their groceries!
What type of work do members do?
Weavers Way offers a wide variety of jobs for Co-op members to choose from in order to complete their work hours. Members can fold renewal notices, slice meats and cheeses and stock the fridge in the deli, stock health and beauty items at Weavers Way Across the Way or Weavers Way Next Door, clean the store, unload the delivery truck, or assist on the floor with produce, frozen items and dairy. Members can work on the farm, do committee work, complete tasks in the finance office, help the membership desk at community events, write for the Shuttle, or work with one of our partner organizations like Friends of the Wissahickon. If you are having trouble completing your work requirement, but wish to remain a working member, please contact our membership department and we will work with you to address any special needs you may have in order to find a job that is right for you.
What is 5% worth to you?
Five percent off at Weavers Way is a meaningful discount, especially for just six hours of work per adult each year. A look at the numbers will tell you how much you can expect to save as a working member. Regular Co-op shoppers who shop in the store once a week or more spend an average of about $100 each week, or $5,200 over the course of a year. That's a savings of $260. For a two-adult household with a Workshare of 12 hours, that averages out to $21.67 per hour, not counting all those warm and fuzzies.
Did you know that you can donate your 5% discount back to the community?
The High Five Discount Program allows you to automatically donate your 5% working member discount to Weavers Way Community Programs. If you opt-in, the discount will be donated automatically each time you shop. You may opt-out at any time.
